In-Frame Construction

Inside the Workshop – How Our Kitchens Are Made

At Shaker Wholesale, we believe the true quality of a kitchen begins with how it is made.

Every cabinet starts as raw timber, carefully prepared and assembled using traditional joinery techniques refined through modern manufacturing precision. This is not mass production in the conventional sense, but skilled craftsmanship carried out at a meaningful scale — where consistency is achieved without sacrificing care or attention to detail.

The result is cabinetry that feels composed, substantial and enduring in everyday use.

What In-Frame Really Means

In an in-frame kitchen, each door and drawer sits within a solid hardwood frame, rather than being mounted onto the front of a cabinet.

This construction method brings both visual and structural benefits. The frame provides strength and rigidity, keeping cabinets square and doors properly aligned over time. Visually, it creates the balanced proportions and furniture-like definition that are the hallmarks of a true Shaker kitchen.

Many modern kitchens use “lay-on” doors fixed directly to the cabinet carcass. While quicker and cheaper to manufacture, this approach cannot replicate the precision, durability or long-term stability of traditional in-frame construction.

Craftsmanship at Every Stage

Our cabinetry begins with carefully selected hardwoods and high-grade engineered materials, chosen for their strength, stability and suitability for painted finishes.

Timber is inspected, prepared and machined before being assembled into frames using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery — a technique trusted for centuries for its ability to withstand movement and wear. Doors and panels are then meticulously sanded and finished, ready for painting.

Modern machinery plays an important role in achieving accuracy and consistency, but it is the hands-on expertise of our craftspeople that ensures every cabinet meets our exacting standards. Hinges, drawer runners and margins are all checked and set with care, ensuring precise operation and alignment.

Our Specialist Production Facility

Our kitchens are manufactured in a dedicated facility in Vietnam, working in close partnership with teams who specialise exclusively in in-frame cabinetry.

This setting allows us to combine skilled craftsmanship with controlled workshop conditions, ensuring excellent consistency while maintaining the level of care that in-frame kitchens demand. Every cabinet is assembled, inspected and tested before approval — including elements that are rarely seen, such as internal edges, back panels and underside finishes.

The partnership enables us to achieve the quality we require, while keeping our kitchens sensibly priced for our customers.

Paint and Finish

Once construction is complete, each cabinet is finished using a multi-stage painting process designed to enhance both durability and depth of colour.

We use high-quality Caparol paints, applied in carefully controlled layers and hand-finished to create a smooth, refined surface with a soft, elegant sheen. Colours can be selected from our curated palette or matched to a bespoke RAL reference, allowing each kitchen to reflect its setting and its owners.

The result is a finish that complements the craftsmanship beneath it — tactile, timeless and made to age gracefully.

From Workshop to Home

Completed kitchens are shipped to the UK, where final delivery and installation preparation takes place.

This approach — combining specialist manufacture with UK-based finishing and support — ensures each kitchen meets our standards for quality, ethics and long-term value. It also allows us to offer exceptional craftsmanship without unnecessary layers of cost.

Built for Longevity

An in-frame kitchen is not simply an aesthetic choice; it is an investment in longevity.

Well-made cabinetry should feel solid in the hand, operate quietly and reliably, and retain its balance and beauty year after year. Properly constructed, an in-frame kitchen improves with age rather than diminishes — quietly earning its place at the heart of the home.
