Planning Your Kitchen — Where to Start

A simple guide to help you begin your kitchen planning journey — from layout ideas and measurements to creating a space that feels just right.

A new kitchen is one of the most exciting projects you can undertake in your home — but it can also feel daunting at the start. How big should your island be? Where should the sink go? How do you make the most of every inch of space?

At Shaker Wholesale, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners plan kitchens that are as practical as they are beautiful. Here’s our guide to getting started — calmly, confidently, and with the right foundations in place.

  1. Think About How You Use Your Kitchen

Before you reach for a tape measure, think about how you live. Do you cook every day or only at weekends? Is your kitchen a family hub, or do you prefer clean lines and quiet order?

The most successful kitchen designs start with lifestyle, not layouts. Knowing whether you need space for kids, guests, or home-working makes it easier to decide on the right arrangement — and whether you’ll benefit most from a U-shape, L-shape, or island layout.

  1. Measure the Space (and Sketch It Out)

Even a simple plan drawn on graph paper can be incredibly useful. Note down:

  • The overall room dimensions
  • Doorways, windows, and ceiling height
  • Services (where the plumbing, gas, and electrics are)
  • Any fixed features like beams or pillars

If you’re unsure, don’t worry — our team can refine your measurements later. What matters most is that we have a clear picture of the room shape and scale.

  1. 3. Think in Zones, Not Just Units

Professional designers plan kitchens around zones — prep, cooking, cleaning, and storage. Start by imagining how you move through the space.

Keep your sink, dishwasher, and bin close together for efficiency. Allow generous worktop space on either side of the hob. Make sure tall cabinets or larders don’t block natural light.

A good kitchen flows naturally, reducing clutter and saving steps. It’s less about filling every wall and more about creating balance.

  1. Consider Natural Light and Colour

Light transforms a kitchen. South-facing rooms can handle deeper, moodier colours while smaller or darker spaces often benefit from soft neutrals.

We have a standard range of 14 colours to choose from included in our prices, but you can also choose from hundreds of other colours for a small additional cost.

  1. Plan for Storage Early

It’s tempting to start with appliances or finishes, but great kitchens are built around smart storage.

Think about where things live — cutlery, pans, dry goods, recycling. We offer a range of internal drawer solutions, pull-outs, spice racks, and tray dividers that keep everything beautifully organised.

Remember: neat storage is what keeps a kitchen feeling calm, even on the busiest days.

  1. Don’t Forget the Details

Handles, hinges, lighting, and worktops all add personality. They also affect how the kitchen feels to use every day.

A Shaker-style kitchen can be dressed up with polished brass for a classic look, or paired with matt black for a more contemporary tone. The design remains the same — timeless — but the atmosphere shifts entirely.

  1. Understand Your Timeline

You’ll probably need a few weeks for planning and design discussions before ordering. Once your order is confirmed, production and readiness for delivery typically takes 12–14 weeks.

If installation is included, we’ll coordinate the timing of delivery and fitting with you directly. For supply-only customers, we’ll ensure your cabinetry is ready on schedule, perfectly packed and labelled for your installer.

  1. Take Your Time — But Get the Right Advice

A well-planned kitchen is one you’ll love for years. Take the time to think through the details, but don’t overthink alone — that’s what we’re here for.

Our designers will review your space, talk through your ideas, and prepare a clear cost estimate based on your layout and preferred finishes. There’s no pressure — just practical advice from people who know what works.
